Events

The programme includes occasional talks, coffee mornings, luncheons, receptions, concerts and other cross-cultural activities such as the Friendship/Cultural visits, all of which are designed to promote friendship and understanding between women of member countries or who are members of likeminded organisations. These events are held in a variety of interesting locations, from private homes, restaurants and clubs, to Embassies and High Commissions and funds raised go, primarily, to the Council’s support of Training Programmes (see Courses page).

Where the venue is not restrictive on numbers, events are opened more widely.

Recently The Women’s Council has joined six other organisations with ties to the Commonwealth in sharing a limited number of events. For example, in 2016 we visited The Middle Temple and the most recent event was a river trip to Greenwich and visit to The Queen’s House.

Please contact: Mrs Gerda Pope at info@womenscouncil.org.uk for more information.

The London Charterhouse

This is a private tour with a resident Brother with an optional lunch at the Thackeray Coffee House at 1.00 pm.

The Charterhouse dates to 14th century when it was built as a priory for Carthusian monks. It was largely destroyed in 1537 but rebuilt as a courtyard house less than ten years later.  It was further enlarged in 1611 when it became an almshouse and school.  The school moved out in 1872 but the almshouse (a home for gentlemen pensioners, known as Brothers) remains.  It is one of the Brothers who will conduct the tour.

Details can be obtained from Gerda at :  info@womenscouncil.org.uk

You can visit the Charterhouse website at :  http://www.thecharterhouse.org/
