Nethma and Dinithi

We are thrilled to share an inspiring milestone in Sri Lanka’s journey toward inclusive education!
Two of our CII 2025 participants from Sri Lanka, Nethma and Dinithi, have recently served as Visiting Lecturers for the Disability & Inclusion course under the University of Kelaniya’s pioneering Higher Diploma in Special Needs Education for Teachers.
This marks the launch of a landmark program designed to prepare future special educators to build a more inclusive, rights-based education system across the country.
In their first lecture, Nethma and Dinithi introduced teachers-in-training to critical concepts that shape inclusive education. The course explores:
- Attitudes & perceptions of disability
- Disability & human rights (local & global perspectives)
- Models of disability & the power of inclusive language
- Disability & global health (ICF framework)
These discussions go beyond theory—equipping educators to challenge stigma, embrace diversity, and foster classrooms where every child feels seen and supported.
Education is the foundation of an inclusive society. By embedding disability rights and inclusive practices into teacher training, this program is creating ripple effects that will empower not just students, but families and communities across Sri Lanka.
We couldn’t be prouder of Nethma and Dinithi for their leadership and commitment. Their work is a vital step toward strengthening inclusive education and ensuring that no child is left behind.
Congratulations, Nethma and Dinithi!
