This is a private tour with a resident Brother with an optional lunch at the Thackeray Coffee House at 1.00 pm.

The Charterhouse dates to 14th century when it was built as a priory for Carthusian monks. It was largely destroyed in 1537 but rebuilt as a courtyard house less than ten years later.  It was further enlarged in 1611 when it became an almshouse and school.  The school moved out in 1872 but the almshouse (a home for gentlemen pensioners, known as Brothers) remains.  It is one of the Brothers who will conduct the tour.
