Running Toward Inclusion: A Historic First for CII Alumni in Darjeeling

Darjeeling, India witnessed a proud and inspiring milestone this year as CII alumni came together to create history – one step, one stride, and one shared purpose at a time.
Shivangi and Phunstok from the CII Class of 2025, along with Divyani from the CII Class of 2023, successfully organised the first-ever Unity Run for Trailblazers with Disabilities in Darjeeling. This landmark initiative marked a powerful moment not only for the alumni community but also for the city’s growing commitment to inclusivity and equal participation.
What Made the Unity Run Special
The Unity Run was designed as a celebratory, non-competitive event, focused on participation, visibility, and encouragement rather than speed or rankings. Children and adults with disabilities were invited to take part alongside family members, volunteers, and supporters—creating an environment of shared joy, dignity, and solidarity.
Accessible routes, volunteer assistance, and a welcoming atmosphere ensured that participants of varying abilities could comfortably and confidently be part of the run. For many participants, this was their first-ever public sporting event, making the experience deeply meaningful and empowering.
A First for Darjeeling’s Marathon Calendar
Every year, the Darjeeling Police host a series of marathons for different sections of society. However, until now, there had never been a dedicated category for children and people with disabilities. Through sustained advocacy, thoughtful planning, and close collaboration with the authorities, the organisers successfully introduced this new category for the very first time.
This step marked an important shift—from accommodation to active inclusion—bringing long-overdue visibility to a community that is often overlooked in public sporting events.
Beyond a Run: A Movement for Inclusion
The Unity Run was more than a one-day event. It was a statement of intent—one that highlighted the importance of inclusive public spaces, equal opportunities, and community-driven change. The sight of participants crossing the finish line was a powerful reminder that barriers are often social, not physical.
This initiative reflects the core values nurtured through the CII network: leadership with empathy, collaboration with purpose, and action that leads to lasting social impact. It also sets a strong example for future editions of the Darjeeling marathons, encouraging organisers and institutions to continue building platforms that welcome everyone.
As Darjeeling takes this meaningful stride forward, the Unity Run stands as a symbol of unity, courage, and progress—proving that when communities run together, everyone moves forward.
